Air India Introduces Basic Fare: Less Expensive Tickets Without Free Meals
On several domestic flights, Air India has implemented a new Basic Fare. What is included, how it operates, and how it varies from Value, Classic, and Flex tickets are all explained here.
If passengers are willing to forgo some of the luxuries that typically come with a full-service airline, Air India has introduced a new "Basic" rate on selected domestic flights, offering them a more affordable ticket alternative.
The new rate, which is only offered in Economy Class, is intended for travelers who are more concerned with cost than with packaged features. This is the closest Air India has come to providing a reduced fare while maintaining some full-service elements for Indian travelers comparing the airline to low-cost carriers like IndiGo or Akasa Air.
What's Included in Air India's Basic Fare?
When using the new Basic fare, travelers will get:
Allowance for 15 kg of checked luggage
7 kilograms is allowed for cabin luggage.
Free coffee or tea on board
The ability to purchase meals separately prior to departure
Free lunches are not included, though. Up to 24 hours before to departure, travelers can place preorders for vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Jain, and diabetic meals.
Air India Regular Fare vs. Basic Fare
Air India's current Value, Classic, and Flex fare families still offer free meals and extra bundled features, in contrast to the new Basic fare.
Basic Fare Value/Classic/Flex Fare Features
15 kg of checked luggage included
7 kilos of cabin baggage is included.
Free tea or coffee Indeed, yes
Free meals: No, yes
Pre-booking meals is paid for.
Extra bundled benefits: Limited Additional advantages
To put it simply, travelers who select Basic pay less but forfeit some packaged benefits including free meals.
Why It's Being Introduced by Air India
Globally, airlines are gradually segregating services from ticket costs so that passengers may decide what they wish to pay for.
This actually means that Air India is attempting to attract domestic travelers on a budget without completely giving up on its full-service identity. While maintaining premium alternatives for travelers who want an all-inclusive experience, the airline seems eager to compete more fiercely on pricing. Where Can I Make a Reservation?
As part of a test initiative, the Basic fare is currently only available on a few domestic routes. At the moment, reservations may only be made via Air India's direct channels:
The website of Air India
The Air India mobile application
Contact center
Tickets offices at airports
According to the airline, whether or not the ticket is extended to further destinations in the future would depend on consumer feedback received during the trial period.
Things Indian Travelers Need to Know
The Basic fare may assist lower ticket prices without compromising luggage restrictions if you're traveling light, have a short domestic trip planned, or typically forego in-flight meals.
However, Air India's current Value, Classic, or Flex pricing options may still offer greater value for passengers who value free meals or prefer additional bundled features. We consider this to be a sensible action. Air India is providing domestic travelers with more options to strike a balance between cost and comfort by lowering entry fees without eliminating essential baggage advantages.
