As fuel prices rise, European airlines are looking to abandon the green goal.

European airlines are facing serious pressure as fuel prices surge sharply due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Airline leaders meeting in Brussels are now pushing back against the EU’s green aviation policies, especially rules requiring the use of synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) from 2030. They argue that these fuels are too expensive and not available in sufficient quantities.

At the same time, jet fuel prices have spiked dramatically doubling in Europe and rising significantly in other regions, forcing airlines to take immediate action.

Key Developments:

Airlines like Air France-KLM, Lufthansa, and Ryanair warn of higher ticket prices
Some carriers have already started adding fuel surcharges
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has canceled around 1,000 flights due to rising costs
Airlines warn of possible fuel shortages due to disrupted oil supply routes like the Strait of Hormuz

Bigger Picture:

European airlines say strict environmental rules could put them at a competitive disadvantage compared to airlines in Asia and the Middle East, where such mandates are less strict.

Despite this, the industry is not abandoning sustainability completely—investments in fuel-efficient aircraft and long-term green solutions are still ongoing.
