Beginning in June 2026, New Zealand will extend the English language requirement for applicants for work visas.

As of June 1, 2026, New Zealand has increased the English language proficiency criteria for applicants for Accredited Employer Work Visas in Skill Level 3 occupations. Many foreign workers, especially Indians, are impacted by the new regulation, however some applications and current AEWV holders are still exempt.

New Zealand has once more tightened its regulations around work visas. Foreign workers seeking an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) in Skill Level 3 occupations must now fulfill minimal English language standards as of June 1, 2026.

Up until now, employees in Skill Levels 4 and 5 were mostly subject to this restriction. A far greater number of foreign workers are now subject to the same requirement as a result of the change.

What Modifications Affect Foreign Employees?
In order to be considered for an AEWV in a Skill Level 3 post, candidates must now show that they are proficient in English using one of the authorized methods, such as citizenship in an English-speaking nation, work experience or study in English, or an authorized language test.

This creates an additional stage before submitting a visa application for overseas workers seeking mid-skilled occupations in New Zealand. It can be necessary for those who don't already have proof of their English competence to take a language test.Who Is Not Affected?

The following will not be subject to the new English requirement:
Applicants for a Global Workforce Seasonal Visa who are currently AEWV holders with a valid visa
Applicants for the Peak Seasonal Visa AEWV
Applicants for AEWV Job Changes
Announcement of Transitional Plans
Immigration New Zealand has implemented interim exemptions to prevent inconvenience for current employees and employers. The new English requirement won't apply to the following groups:

AEWV holders who apply for another AEWV in a Skill Level 3 capacity and whose visas expire on or before December 1, 2026

Employees who have already filed an AEWV application with English language proof

These steps are intended to assist firms in keeping current employees while the new regulations are implemented.

What Employers Can Anticipate

Companies may have to wait longer to hire foreign workers for Skill Level 3 roles. Before applying, candidates who were previously eligible may now need to submit more paperwork or take a language test. This is a component of a larger trend in the immigration laws of New Zealand. The government is increasing admission criteria for temporary migrant workers while emphasizing labor integration and compliance.

Why Change Is Occurring in New Zealand
The government claims that the majority of AEWV holders are currently Skill Level 3 workers.
Stronger English proficiency, according to officials, will enable immigrants to communicate more effectively, comprehend their rights and obligations at work, and, when needed, denounce abusive or noncompliant employers.
What Indian Applicants Should Do Indian nationals who intend to use the AEWV route to work in New Zealand should:
Verify if their line of work qualifies for Skill Level 3.
Examine the authorized English language paths.
If necessary, schedule testing in advance.

When preparing to apply for a visa, give yourself extra time.
When hiring starts, candidates who prepare ahead of time are less likely to experience delays.
Instead of completely banning immigration, we see New Zealand gradually improving compliance standards. The rule is reasonable for Indian workers, but many candidates would now need to prepare in English beforehand.
