Canada's CPTPP Work Permit: Eligible Countries, Professions and Requirements
Canada has added the United Kingdom to its CPTPP work permit program, allowing qualified British professionals and technicians to apply for temporary work in Canada. Here's how the shift affects Indian professionals and why they're not protected.
Canada just included the United Kingdom on the list of countries whose residents can use the CPTPP.
Professionals and technicians can apply for temporary work in Canada. The modification takes effect on September 1, 2026, and Canada updated its International Mobility Program instructions appropriately.
What is the CPTPP?
The Comprehensive and Progressive deal for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is a trade deal between Canada and ten other countries. Its mobility features enable eligible nationals of partner countries to enter Canada temporarily for business and professional purposes, including specified work-permit categories.
The CPTPP countries are:
Australia
Brunei
Canada
Chile
Japan
Malaysia
Mexico
New Zealand
Peru
Singapore
Vietnam
United Kingdom
The UK joined the CPTPP in 2024, but Canada's immigration guidelines have since been amended to include UK citizens in the Professionals and Technicians category.
Who is eligible to use the Canadian work permit route?
The Professionals and Technicians group includes qualified workers in specific occupations, such as:
Finance Science Engineering
Information technology
Business Management
Other specified professional and technological fields
In most cases, applicants must have a Canadian work offer in a suitable occupation, as well as the necessary education and professional experience. They must also comply with Canada's wage regulations, which include getting at least the applicable prevailing wage.
There is one crucial distinction for Indian travelers and professionals: India is not a CPTPP member, hence Indian passport holders cannot use this specific CPTPP-based work-permit category just because they have a job offer in Canada. They must be eligible through another Canadian immigration or work-permit procedure.
The overall trend is clear: trade agreements are increasingly being utilized to provide focused mobility routes for trained professionals rather than broadening employment opportunities.
What should UK citizens check?
Eligibility is determined by the specific occupation, qualifications, work experience, Canadian job offer, and other CPTPP requirements. The agreement does not grant all UK professionals an automatic right to work in Canada.
Applicants should therefore review the occupation-specific requirements before using the CPTPP route.
Canada's official immigration guidance includes a current list of qualifying professions and specific qualifications.
Travunited Take:
We consider this as a valuable Canada work path for qualifying UK professionals, but Indian applicants get no direct benefit and should instead look into Canada's other work-permit possibilities.
