Canada Streamlines Student Work Regulations: As of April 2026, No Co-op Work Permit Is Required

Beginning in April 2026, Canada will no longer require a separate work permit for international students to perform co-ops and internships using only a study permit.

For overseas students, Canada has streamlined one more step. As of April 1, 2026, qualified post-secondary students can perform internships or work placements as part of their education program without a separate co-op work visa.

The good news is that students can now complete their required job experience with just their study permission, which will save time and paperwork.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is working to improve the effectiveness of the International Student Program without expanding the number of students who are permitted to work.

What's Changed?

In the past, even when their course required a work experience, many international students had to apply for a co-op work permit. Students no longer need to apply for a separate work visa in order to complete the compulsory work experience as part of their academic program.

As part of their course requirements, students can work with firms who have been permitted by their Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

In actuality, this just implies that there will only be one permit rather than two.

Neither the amount of immigrants nor employment privileges are altered. Simply said, it eliminates an additional administrative process.

What Qualifies as a Work Placement for Students?
Work placements are a mandatory component of study programs at Canadian postsecondary institutions.
These could consist of:
Placements for cooperatives
Practicums and Internships
Mentorship initiatives
Additional required job experience related to the course

These placements must be approved by the student's DLI, and students must complete them in order to complete the program.

Who Is Eligible to Take Part?
If they fulfill the following requirements, international students may participate in work placements:
possess a current study permit
The study permit permits employment on campus.
Get confirmation from their DLI that the location is necessary.
Attend a reputable post-secondary university in Canada full-time.
Enroll in a program that lasts for at least six months.
A degree, diploma, or certificate is the outcome of the program.
50% or less of the entire educational program consists of work placement.

Students may occasionally require a Social Insurance Number (SIN) in order to work lawfully in Canada.

What Takes Place with Current Applications for Co-op Work Permits?

There is no reason for concern for students who have already applied for a co-op work visa. Eligible pending applications will be automatically withdrawn by the IRCC. Students don't need to do anything more.
