DGCA Updates Flight Refund Guidelines and Permits Free Modifications In less than 48 hours

DGCA Updates Flight Refund Guidelines and Permits Free Modifications In less than 48 hours

Passengers now have 48 hours to change or cancel their reservations without incurring additional costs according to changes made by India's aviation regulator. The new regulations also make airline obligations and refund schedules more clear.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation regulator, has modified the regulations regarding refunds and cancellations of airline tickets. This update is important if you travel frequently. Particularly within the first two days following booking, it offers passengers greater freedom.

1. Free cancellations for 48 hours after booking

This is the significant shift. Within 48 hours of booking, passengers can now modify or cancel their tickets without incurring additional fees.

We refer to this as a "look-in option."
It allows travelers to reconsider their arrangements, correct errors, or change dates without incurring financial loss. However, there's a catch. This new regulation is only applicable if

On the airline's website, the ticket is purchased directly.
The departure time of the flight is at least:
7 days away for flights within the country.
International flights are 15 days away.
This option won't be available if your flight is earlier than that.
It is important to note that standard airline cancellation fees are applicable after the 48-hour window expires.

2. Name Modifications in a Day
Small spelling mistake in your name? Earlier, airlines often charged correction fees, even for minor typing errors. Now, airlines cannot charge extra for correcting the name of the same passenger if:
The error is reported within 24 hours of booking.
The ticket was booked directly on the airline’s website.

What Type of Name Corrections Are Allowed Under the New DGCA Rule?

Under the updated rules, only minor spelling corrections are allowed within 24 hours of booking if the ticket is booked directly on the airline’s website.

What's permitted:
Minor typos in the same traveler's name
One or two missing, added, or misplaced letters
For instance, typing "Rahul Sharma" as "Rhaul Sharma" or "Rahul Sharama"

What is prohibited:
An entirely different name
For instance, substituting "Amit Sharma" for "Rahul Sharma"
To put it briefly, minor spelling errors can be fixed. This rule prohibits a complete name change.
Name mismatches sometimes cause issues at the airport while checking in, thus this is useful.

3. Airlines Are Responsible for Refunds
A lot of travelers make reservations using travel agencies or portals. Refund disputes used to frequently go back and forth between agents and airlines. The passengers were stranded in the center.
The DGCA has now made it quite clear that the airline is in charge of the refund, regardless of whether you purchase through an internet portal or a travel agency.

Agents are regarded as the airline's representatives. Refunds must be processed by airlines within 14 working days.

This minor but significant adjustment increases accountability and clarity.

4. Cancellations for Medical Emergencies
The guidelines for ticket cancellations owing to medical crises have also been updated by the DGCA. Airlines have been told to handle such situations more responsibly and in accordance with current rules, however specific airline procedures may differ.
For travelers, this implies improved assistance in the event of a real emergency.

What Were the Previous Regulations?
Prior to this update:
The 48-hour free cancellation window was not required.
Even minor name typos could result in rectification fees for airlines.
When making reservations through agents, it was frequently unclear who was responsible for refunds.
Often, passengers had to wait longer to receive their refunds.
To put it briefly, travelers were less protected.

How This Affects Travellers
More Flexibility: You now get two days to rethink your booking if the travel date is far enough away. This is especially useful for:
Visa-dependent travel.
Corporate bookings.
Family trips where plans may shift.

Fewer Charges for Simple Mistakes: Minor name errors won’t automatically cost you money, as long as you act quickly.

Faster Refunds: The 14-working-day rule gives passengers a timeline. That’s important when you are waiting for a large refund.

What This Really Means for Frequent Flyers
If you are a frequent flyer and often book tickets early, this rule works in your favour. It reduces financial risk when booking in advance. You can lock in fares without immediate fear of penalty if plans change quickly.

The bonus might not be applicable, though, if you make your reservation around departure. Thus, time is important.

Concluding remarks

The updated refund guidelines from the DGCA improve the balance between travelers and airlines.

Not all cancellation fees are waived. However, within the first 48 hours, they do provide travelers with a minor but crucial safety net.

These adjustments can help you save money and reduce stress if you make your reservations directly with airlines and prepare ahead.
