ETA Rollout Expands in South Africa in 2026: Detailed Entry Requirements

ETA Rollout Expands in South Africa in 2026: Detailed Entry Requirements
Beginning in October 2025, South Africa will implement an Electronic Travel Authorization system in phases. Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, and Mexican visitors must apply online in advance of their trip or face denial of entry.

South Africa initiated the rollout of the new Electronic Travel Authorization system, or ETA, last October 2025. The government now intends to impose this new condition on further tourists.
If you travel frequently for work or pleasure, you should be well aware of this.
Let's put it in plain language.

What's the ETA for South Africa?
Before you board your flight to South Africa, you need to obtain the ETA online. It is not an airport-issued visa. Before you may travel, you must apply online and be approved.

The ETA system in South Africa expedites immigration upon arrival through automation and digital checks. You get a QR code after being accepted. At the airport, you present the QR code, either printed out or on your phone.

Faster entry and less paperwork at the border are the two main objectives of ETA.

What Time Does the ETA Begin?
In October 2025, the rollout got underway.
First Phase
Initially, the ETA was limited to ambassadors from:
India's Mainland China
Mexico and Indonesia

This was true for attendees of the Johannesburg G20 Summit. Only the following were allowed entry:
OR Tambo International Airport
International Airport in Cape Town
The system was soon expanded to include Lanseria International Airport.
The Second Phase
The ETA requirement was extended by the end of November 2025.
Currently, every passport holder from:
India, Indonesia, and Mainland China
If Mexico is visiting South Africa for business or pleasure, they must apply for an ETA.
Ordinary passport holders from these four nations will need to apply prior to travel as of February 12, 2026.
In the early stages of implementation, the ETA is currently only needed at a few airports.

Who Doesn't Require an Estimate?
Certain travelers are exempt. An ETA is not necessary if you:
possess a permanent residence in South Africa
possess legitimate residency rights in South Africa
own a work permit from South Africa
All other citizens of the countries on the list are required to apply.

For what duration is the ETA valid?
An authorized ETA permits:
Several entries
90 days or more each visit
One more extension of ninety days
You can apply for the extension online.
If your extension is granted, you could stay for a total of 180 days.

What Is the Price of the ETA?
A set charge has not been formally issued by the government.
Rather, the price is determined by each country's reciprocal visa accords with South Africa. Simply put, the cost is determined by what your nation charges South African tourists.
Before submitting an application, always verify the most recent fee on the official website.

What's the Difference Between ETA and eVisa?
The eVisa system is already in place in South Africa.
The ETA site now works in tandem
with it.
The ETA portal is only available to travelers who qualify for the ETA. The standard eVisa
system must be used by others.
Speed is the main distinction. At the airport, the ETA is intended to be quicker and more automated.

What Makes South Africa Presenting the ETA?
The larger picture is shown here.
Electronic travel authorization systems are currently used by many nations to track entry prior to passengers boarding a flight.

For instance:
United Kingdom of Kenya
Israel
This worldwide trend is being followed by South Africa.

The objective is to:
Boost border security
expedite airport processing
Increase the number of visitors and investors
Cut down on lengthy immigration lines
To put it briefly, it enables authorities to check travelers prior to their arrival.

What Takes Place If You Show Up Without an Estimate of Time?
This is a crucial section.
If you come without an ETA even though you are supposed to have one:
You can't apply at the airport.
You won't be allowed in.
On-arrival is not a possibility.
You must apply before boarding your flight if you are traveling for business or pleasure and are from Mexico, India, Indonesia, or Mainland China.

The Implications for Passengers
Add the ETA to your travel itinerary if you are traveling to South Africa in 2026 and you have a passport from one of the impacted nations.
Apply as soon as possible.
Verify your eligibility for the airport again.
Be prepared with your QR code.
If you abide by the guidelines, the system should make entrance easier.
This is only another step in the global trend toward digital border control for ordinary travelers.
