Finland Will Stricterly Enforce New Language and Income Requirements for Student Visas

Finland Will Stricterly Enforce New Language and Income Requirements for Student Visas

Finland is preparing more stringent immigration regulations for foreign students, such as more stringent financial checks, more stringent language exams, and postponed family reunification. Indian students may have a more difficult time obtaining a visa if they intend to study in Finland starting in 2027.

Indians and other foreign students may soon find it more difficult to obtain a student visa for Finland. The Finnish government is preparing more stringent immigration regulations that would impede family reunion rights, increase inspection of student funds, and tighten language checks.

The draft proposal is anticipated to be presented to Parliament in the spring of 2026 and was made available for public comment on May 18. The stricter family and income regulations might go into effect in the spring of 2027 if they are approved, and further changes might be implemented later that year.

This alters the situation for Indian students who are considering Finnish colleges as a less expensive option than those in the UK or Australia.

Family Members Might Need to Wait
Students can currently apply for residency permits with their spouse or kids. Finland now wishes to alter that.

Before obtaining residency permits, Finland requires verification of English or study language ability. According to officials, some pupils now arrive with poor language skills and struggle academically.

If the applicant does not match the language criterion, a residence permit may be denied under the proposed proposal.

This implies that universities may no longer be sufficient for Indian aspirants. Before granting visas, immigration authorities are evidently getting ready to independently determine if students are financially and academically competent.

To be honest, this is starting to spread throughout Europe. After experiencing housing shortages, abuse concerns, and increased migratory pressure, nations that previously actively recruited international students are now attempting to filter applications more strictly.

Finland Will Conduct a Citizenship Exam
In order to evaluate citizens' understanding of society, laws, and values, the Interior Ministry recently proposed a new citizenship exam. If parliament approves the test, it may go into force as early as next year. This may require many candidates to take an additional step in order to receive a Finnish passport.

Why Indians Need to Pay Attention
Over the past few years, Finland has subtly gained popularity among Indian students due to:
less expensive tuition than in certain Western nations
Opportunities for employment after study
Simpler entry to the Schengen area
Gulf and European airlines offer direct, one-stop service from Indian hubs like Delhi and Mumbai.

However, these new regulations can make the procedure more costly, time-consuming, and stringent.

Students who intend to apply starting in 2027 should pay particular attention to how Finland decides on language and income requirements in the coming year.

We think Finland is trying to slow low-quality student migration without fully shutting the door. Serious Indian students with strong finances and language scores should still do well.
