New Zealand is making it easier for experienced overseas workers to apply for permanent residency. Starting August 24, 2026, the country will establish two new pathways under its Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa, allowing eligible workers more alternatives than the present points system.
For foreigners working in New Zealand or considering a skilled relocation, the adjustments may benefit individuals with extensive work experience but few qualification-based points.
Skilled Work Experience Pathway Explained
The largest change is a new resident pathway based on work experience rather than points. To qualify, candidates must:
· Have a job or an offer in an ANZSCO Skill Level 1 to 3 occupation.
· Earn at least 1.1 times the New Zealand Skilled Migrant wage threshold (median wage).
· Have at least three years of related work experience in a qualifying occupation.
· Complete an additional two years of skilled work experience in New Zealand in a qualifying position that pays more than the salary criteria.
Unlike the existing system, applicants following this pathway will not be required to meet the six-point requirement.
Evidence will matter.
Immigration New Zealand requires applicants to establish their job history using documentation such as:
• Job Descriptions
• Employment Agreements
• Tax records
• Certificates of service for international work experience
• Self-employment does not count toward the minimum job experience.
Not every occupation will qualify.
The path is not without limits. Workers in ANZSCO Skill Level 4 or 5 occupations are unable to apply using this route. Those who work in occupations on New Zealand's Red List are likewise excluded.
Applicants in Amber List occupations may apply, but they must meet additional eligibility standards.
