India Airports to Stop Immigration Stamping of Boarding Passes Starting September 1
International travelers departing from India may notice a little but significant difference at airport immigration booths beginning September 1, 2026. The Bureau of Immigration (BoI) is removing the obligation for immigration inspectors to stamp boarding permits during the departure process.
What's changing?
Beginning September 1, international passengers departing from Indian airports will be able to present an electronic boarding pass on their smartphone during immigration clearance.
Travelers with actual boarding passes can still use them, but immigration authorities will no longer stamp them.

Why Are the Rules Changing?
According to the Bureau of Immigration, the move is meant to speed up, simplify, and improve the convenience of immigration processing. Physical stamping might occasionally be inconvenient, particularly when stamps were ambiguous or poorly placed.
The reform is also part of India's larger transition to digital and paperless travel practices.
What should international travelers do?
If you fly abroad from India after September 1st:
Have your e-boarding pass available on your phone.
A printed boarding pass may still be utilized.
You will not need to have your boarding pass stamped at immigration.
Have your passport and other necessary travel paperwork ready.
Follow the airport's regular security and boarding procedures.
Travelers participating in the Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveler Program (FTI-TTP) can utilize e-boarding passes at appropriate e-gates.

Is Immigration Clearance being removed?
No. The immigration process is not being terminated. The modification is confined to physical boarding pass stamping.
Passengers would still need to fulfill the necessary immigration clearance before leaving India.
What about Passport Stamping?
The government is also working on methods to remove or abolish immigration entry and exit stamps on Indian passports, but this is a separate development from the September 1 boarding-pass shift.
