Ireland allows residents to travel with expired IRP cards until August 31 due to renewal delays.

Ireland allows residents to travel with expired IRP cards until August 31 due to renewal delays.
Due to delays in renewal, Ireland now allows eligible people, including Indians, to travel using expired IRP cards until August 31, 2026. Examine eligibility, travel regulations, and employment privileges.
Ireland is temporarily permitting qualifying foreign residents to travel with expired Irish Residence Permission (IRP) cards while renewal applications are underway. The reprieve is effective from July 13 until August 31, 2026, offering thousands of citizens, including Indians, further flexibility as processing delays persist.
The temporary arrangement comes as Irish Residence Permission (IRP) card renewals take anywhere from 7 to 17 weeks, with some categories having the greatest wait times.

The Right to Work Continues
Additionally, eligible residents whose IRP cards expire while their renewal is being processed are protected by the temporary solution. In order to continue being eligible, candidates must:
Before the current authorization expires, submit the IRP renewal application.
During the application procedure, upload all necessary documents.
If a valid work permit is necessary for their immigration status, keep one during the renewal period.
Under the same temporary arrangement, those who do not need an employment permit can also stay in Ireland.

What Takes Place After August 31st?
On August 31, 2026, the concession expires.
IRP cards that have expired will no longer be permitted for travel or re-entry into Ireland as of September 1. Additionally, the government would reinstate its regular 12-week Notice to Employers policy, which permits qualified employees to maintain their current immigration status while renewal applications are being processed.
Only if the renewal application was submitted prior to the expiration of the prior authorization will such protections remain in effect.

What This Signifies for Foreigners Residing in Ireland
The measure eliminates one immediate worry for all overseas families, professionals, and students already residing in Ireland. You can continue traveling and, if you qualify, reside and work in Ireland until August 31, 2026, if you applied to renew your IRP card before it expired.
If you intend to travel to India or another nation before coming back to Ireland, you need to bring:
Your IRP card has expired.
A printed travel notice from Immigration Service Delivery (ISD)
Evidence that you filed your IRP renewal application prior to its expiration
When necessary, a current work permit
Additionally, as airlines must accept the ISD travel notification in lieu of the expired IRP card, passengers should confirm with their airline prior to leaving.

It's Getting Harder to Ignore Delays
Since late 2025, Ireland has struggled with extended IRP processing waits; some Stamp 4 renewals take up to 17 weeks. This interim solution is part of a larger trend in a number of immigration systems, where governments are providing temporary relief rather than expediting the resolution of backlogs in processing.

Travunited Take:
For Indians residing in Ireland, we believe this is a workable temporary solution. Since these travel concessions expire on August 31, 2026, I would still refrain from waiting until the last minute to submit renewal applications.
