Ireland Permits Non-EU Residents to Take Holiday Vacations With Expired IRP Cards

For non-EU citizens awaiting IRP renewals, Ireland has implemented a temporary travel restriction. You can travel between December 8, 2025, and January 31, 2026, provided you have the Travel Confirmation Notice, your expired IRP, and proof of renewal if you applied before your card expired.

You may have heard the major announcement if you are an Irish citizen who is not a member of the EU or EEA. To assist those who still need to travel in December or January while awaiting the renewal of their Irish Residence Permit (IRP), the Irish government has implemented a temporary Travel Confirmation Notice.

Traveling With An IRP That Has Expired

You can still travel outside of Ireland even if your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) is no longer valid if you applied to renew it before it expired. This regulation is in effect from December 8, 2025, to January 31, 2026.
The reason for this is that immigration offices are experiencing delays. Many have already finished the registration process, but it may take up to two weeks for their new IRP card to come via mail.

Things You'll Need While Traveling

Bring three items with you to help you avoid any problems at the airport or border checks:
The Travel Confirmation Notice in print
Your expired IRP card Evidence proving you submitted an application for renewal prior to the expiration date (such as the email indicating the date of submission)
Keep these documents close to hand while traveling, as airlines and immigration officials may request them.

Get the Travel Confirmation Notice here.

If your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) has expired, download the Travel Confirmation Notice from the link below and bring a printed copy with you to Ireland.

The Reason for Issuing This Notice

It is important to note that there is presently a backlog in card processing and registration for Ireland's Immigration Service. It may take up to two weeks for the new IRP card to come by mail, even after your residence permit has been renewed.
In order to prevent legal residents from postponing or canceling their travel arrangements during the hectic Christmas and New Year's holiday season, the new Travel Confirmation Notice was created.

A Few More Things to Keep in Mind
This unique authorization is only valid from December 8, 2025, to January 31, 2026.
The rule is being communicated by the government to foreign missions and airlines.
the other nation you pass through on your journey back to Ireland still has obligations that you must fulfill, including obtaining the necessary visas.

Concluding Remarks

You can travel during the Christmas and New Year season without having to wait for the new card to come if your IRP renewal is underway and you applied on time. To travel stress-free, just make sure you download and print the Travel Confirmation Notice and have all necessary paperwork.
