Updates from Japan Airlines Fuel Increase for International Travel in May and June of 2026

Due to the high cost of jet fuel, Japan Airlines will raise the fuel fee for foreign flights from May to June of 2026. Verify the most recent fees by area and what travelers should anticipate.

Tickets for overseas flights with Japan Airlines (JAL) or Japan Transocean Air (JTA) in May and June of 2026 would likely cost more. Due to a significant increase in the price of jet fuel worldwide, the airlines have updated their fuel fee.

Tickets issued in Japan between May 1 and June 30, 2026, are impacted by the change.

The Reasons Behind the Rising Fuel Surcharge

Every two months, fuel surcharges are modified in accordance with the average cost of Singaporean kerosene-type jet fuel. The average price for February and March of 2026 was USD 146.99 per barrel, which is seen as abnormally high.

At this price point, the surcharge would typically fall into the highest band, Zone R. Travelers will instead be charged at Zone Q due to a temporary government subsidy that was implemented during the review period, which somewhat lessens the rise.

To put it simply, prices are still increasing, but not as much as they could have.

What Travellers Should Know
Fuel surcharges are added to the base airfare and can significantly impact total ticket cost, especially on long-haul routes.

These fees are applicable to:
Japan Airlines flights
Partner carriers' code-share flights
Tickets purchased in Japan during the designated time frame
Government approval is still pending for the final fee levels.

What Travelers Should Know About This

Travel in the summer of 2026 may feel significantly more expensive, especially on flights to Europe, North America, and Oceania. The growth is nevertheless significant when compared to early 2026 levels, even with government support moderating it.

It could be beneficial to make reservations in advance and thoroughly consider fare breakdowns if you are traveling to or departing from Japan. The timing of your reservation may be important because fuel fees are subject to change every two months.
