Luxembourg Scraps Temporary Stay Permit, Introduces 6-Month Visa D Starting October 2026.
Luxembourg will phase out the Temporary Authorization to Stay on October 1, 2026, and will require all residence permit applicants to apply for a six-month Visa D.
Luxembourg is deleting one stage from its residency permit process beginning October 1, 2026, which means foreign nationals will no longer need to get a Temporary Authorization to Stay (AST) before applying for a Visa D.
Under the current system, residence permit candidates typically go through two stages:

Luxembourg Visa D Validity Doubled to Six Months.
The validity length of the Visa D will also be extended from 90 days to six months. This allows candidates extra time to reach Luxembourg and complete the residence permit process after acquiring their visa.
For overseas travelers, the adjustment eliminates one application stage, although the Visa D need remains. Indians traveling to Luxembourg for residential purposes must still obtain the necessary visa before entering the country.

What Applicants Should Know
Since October 1, 2026:
AST application is no longer necessary.
Visa D is required for all residence permit applicants.
Visa D validity is six months instead of 90 days.
Visa-exempt nationals: Must also apply for a visa D.
Cost and Processing Times: The details have not yet been clarified.
Employers and international workers will profit significantly from fewer preliminary steps. Visa-free entrance will no longer replace the Visa D requirement for residency applications, so visa-exempt nationals should exercise extra caution.
