New Zealand Expands the Post-Study Stay Period and Tightens Work Regulations for Student Visas
New Zealand grants qualified overseas students an additional month to contemplate their future move after completing their course, and it caps work privileges for incoming master's students.
Beginning on October 27, 2026, New Zealand modified its student visa regulations, limiting new master's students' ability to work while allowing overseas students more time to decide what to do after their courses are over.
Indian students who intend to study in New Zealand are impacted by the changes, especially those who hope to switch to a different visa after graduation or who depend on part-time employment to cover living expenses.

Changes to New Zealand Student Visas Effective October 27
1. Master's students are subject to a weekly work cap of 25 hours.
Unlimited in-study work rights will no longer be granted to new master's-by-research students. They will be subject to the same rules as other master's students, which permit them to work up to 25 hours a week and full-time on holidays.
New student visa applications filed on or after October 27, 2026, are subject to this restriction. This particular adjustment does not apply to current visas.

2. English language proficiency is scrutinized more
When determining whether students can fulfilll their visa requirements, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has reinforced its guidelines to explicitly consider English competence.
Indian applicants should make sure their English-language supporting documentation is correct and satisfies the standards of the course and visa category they have selected.
3. In certain situations, the processing of visas may be halted.
There are now more situations in which INZ can formally halt the processing of student visas, such as when it is looking into possible non-compliance by an educational institution.
This gives Indian applicants yet more opportunity to look out an institution's compliance history before committing to travel or paying tuition.
4. After certain classes conclude, students receive an additional month.
Instead of just one month, students whose visa expiration is dependent on finishing their degree will now have two months to choose their next course of action. For visas covered by that rule, the current March 31 expiration date is still in effect.
Indian grads may use the additional time to plan their next job, departure, or visa application. It does not, however, automatically ensure eligibility for another visa or offer further work rights.

What Students from Other Countries Should Do
These modifications suggest a closer connection between student visas and their main objective, which is education. Before planning post-study plans, international students should examine their specific visa expiration conditions, confirm the standing of their institution, and budget around the 25-hour weekly employment limit.
Travunited Perspective:
Although we view the additional post-course time as a practical help for Indian students, candidates must carefully consider their budget and never rely solely on part-time income due to stricter employment regulations.
