Norway Introduces Online Renewals of Residence Permits for Qualified Foreign Citizens
Certain residence permits can be renewed online by qualified foreign residents, including Indians residing in Norway, according to Norway's new HOT digital system. Who is eligible and who still has to apply via conventional methods are shown below.
In many situations, foreign nationals who currently reside in Norway can renew their residency permits online without going to the police. Since May 5, 2026, a few police districts have begun implementing the new system, known as HOT (Heldigital Oppmøteløsning).
If they match the requirements, this might expedite permission renewals and cut down on pointless appointments for foreign nationals studying and working in Norway.
Who Can Make Use of the New HOT System?
The only foreign nationals who can use the digital service are:
Are renewing a permit they already have from within Norway.
Possess a Norwegian digital identity, like a BankID or eID.
Reside in a police district that has implemented the HOT system.
Who Still Requires the Conventional Method?
Many candidates will still need to use the standard application process, such as:
Indians from outside of Norway are applying.

These candidates must continue applying through a Norwegian consulate or, if one is available, have the application submitted through a Priority Service Center by their company, client, or attorney.
