Plans for electric air taxis are progressing in the United States.

As part of a federal pilot program to test how electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles function in real-world scenarios, electric air taxi developers Joby Aviation and Archer want to deploy aircraft in several U.S. states.

By supporting early operations as advanced air mobility aircraft are incorporated into the national airspace, the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program seeks to expedite regulatory advancement and infrastructure development.

Along with businesses testing autonomous and hybrid-electric aviation technologies, BETA Technologies, Electra, and Wisk are among the other aircraft developers taking part in the program.

In order to start operations in ten states before receiving full Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification, Joby Aviation stated that it has been chosen as a partner in five successful applications. Engagement could hasten the transition to commercial service.

"This year, communities across America will be able to see it in the skies above their own cities instead of just reading about the future of flight," stated Joby Aviation founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt.

In a press statement, Archer stated that it was chosen to work with state and local government partners in Texas, Florida, and New York to deploy its Midnight aircraft. Archer's piloted electric air taxi, Midnight, can accommodate four people.

Prior to flights, which are scheduled to start in the second half of 2026, the business intends to shore up local skills and infrastructure. It is anticipated that the endeavor will improve public awareness of the technology and offer operating experience.

Adam Goldstein, the founder and CEO of Archer, stated, "This is the clearest sign yet from the White House, the FAA, and the DOT that bringing air taxis to market in the United States is a real priority."

Similar to helicopters, eVTOL aircraft are built to take off and land vertically, but their electric propulsion systems, according to their supporters, can cut emissions and noise.

Investors like Delta, United Airlines, Uber, and Toyota continue to place bets on the technology as inventors strive to introduce commercial air taxi service in major cities, despite the industry's recent consolidation.
