US F-1 Visa Rules Change: New 4-Year Limit and 30-Day Grace Period.

US F-1 Visa Rules Change: New 4-Year Limit and 30-Day Grace Period.
The US will replace the F-1 "duration of status" system with set admission durations beginning September 15, 2026. International students may face increased extension criteria and a shorter post-study leaving period.
Students studying in the United States will face a tighter immigration clock beginning September 15, 2026, when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) replaces the long-standing "duration of status" system for F-1 students with set admission periods.
For students, the practical implications are clear: finishing a program beyond the time period provided at entry may necessitate more documentation, a USCIS extension application, or overseas travel to seek a new admission period.Passport & Photo Requirements for Your F-1 Visa Interview | F1Apply: U.S. Universities Applications for International Students
F-1 students are moving to fixed admission periods.
F-1 students are normally admitted for "duration of status" until September 15, allowing them to remain in the United States while maintaining valid student status and completing authorized practical training.
Under the new method, admission will generally be based on the program length provided on Form I-20, also known as the Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status. The maximum entry time will be four years.
Students will still be able to enter the United States up to 30 days before their program begins. After completing their program, post-completion OPT, or STEM OPT, they will have 30 days to depart the United States or seek another lawful status. Canada’s Open and Multicultural Society Explained
Post-Study Departure Window Reduced in Half
The reduced grace period is likely to be the most noticeable adjustment for pupils.
The existing system typically grants 60 days following program completion or post-graduation OPT. From September 15, this is reduced to 30 days.
This gives graduates less time to organize travel, change status, or make other immigration plans.

Special limitations for English courses in public schools
The four-year limit does not apply equally.
English language students are admitted for a maximum of 24 months, with a 30-day leaving period.
Public high school students have a maximum of 12 months, which includes school breaks and annual vacation.

What if the program takes longer?
Students who require longer time to complete their current program, begin a new program, or engage in post-completion OPT or STEM OPT may need to apply for an Extension of Stay (EOS) with US Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Students should first communicate with their assigned school representative to get an updated Form I-20 that includes the mandatory EOS recommendation. They must then submit Form I-539, pay the necessary charge, and provide the required biometrics.
There is another option for eligible students with a valid visa. They can depart the United States and request a fresh period of entrance from US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) when they return.
The overall trend is clear: US student immigration is shifting toward more limited admission times and active compliance management, rather than allowing status to run alongside academic programs. Study Guru - International Education
What happens when students travel?
F-1 students who leave the US after September 15 may be given a new fixed admission period when they return. CBP will decide the duration based on the student's current SEVIS record and accompanying documentation, as well as the appropriate eligibility and admissibility conditions.
There's also a transitional provision. Students who are physically in the United States on September 15 and file for post-completion OPT or STEM OPT by March 18, 2027, are not required to seek for an extension of stay under that provision.

We regard this as a practical tightening, particularly for Indian students whose programs are lengthy. Check your I-20 dates early and schedule extensions or travel before your admission period ends.
